About HICOM

Hearing Impaired Children of Michiana is a social group designed to bring together children with hearing loss to connect with peers facing similar experiences. The group provides a supportive environment where children can build friendships, boost their confidence, and develop essential self-advocacy skills. Through regular activities and peer interactions, participants learn to communicate effectively, express their needs, and navigate social situations with greater independence. This community-focused approach helps children with hearing loss feel empowered and better prepared to engage confidently in everyday life.

How It Began…

Dr. Chelsea Twyman always knew she wanted to work with children to improve their lives, even prior to selecting audiology as her career path. After working in multiple environments and with other sub-specialists, Dr. Twyman realized there was a huge need for children with hearing loss to be connected with other children like them. Children with hearing loss face everyday challenges that the majority of use won’t understand until we’re 65+ years old, as most children with hearing loss are born to normal hearing parents.

Dr. Twyman strongly believes that alike peer interactions are beneficial for children with hearing loss and for their families to provide support, encourage device use or learning ASL for newly identified children with hearing loss and teach self-advocacy in the schools that will one day translate into self-advocacy in the work place.
